Learning Outcomes

After finishing this course, the student is able to name the key areas of usable security, name the classic articles of usable security and explain why these articles are so important, list the specific requirements of usable security compared to “general usability”, apply various usability methods to testing usable security and to improve usable security through user-centred design, evaluate the level of usability of security on security applications, name new areas of research in usable security, name some main articles, researchers and research forums of usable security, and present arguments for the importance of usability for creating security.

Content

This course is a basic introduction to the field of usable security. It presents the key areas of usable security as a field, how to apply usability and user-centred methods to security, and the latest developments in the field.

Course consists of lectures (voluntary), writing an essay on selected topic (obligatory) and giving a presentation on the essay.

T-110.5220 in Spring 2011 periods III-IV

 

This course will start January 20, 2012 2-4 pm at T5 A133, T-building, Konemiehentie 2.

There will be bi-weekly lectures in the beginning of period III to serve as an introduction to the field.  To pass the course, student needs to write an essay on a selected topic, and give a presentation on the essay contents on May 11, 2012. Attending the lectures is voluntary. The course will be running through periods III and IV and end on May 11, 2011.

 

Course grade is formed of an individual essay (obligatory). The course is graded with 1-5.
