The Integrated English course, KIE-98.1700, is mandatory for this seminar.
The students who passed the T-110.5290 course last autumn do not have to participate in this English course since it is same as last autumn's course (note: last autumn's English course does not entitle students to Kie-98.1700 credits). But this English course is recommended for them, too. One credit is awarded if the students participate in the third English lecture (01.4.2011) and do the test during that lecture.
The student of this seminar get marking of Kie-98.1700 course that is accepted as a written part of foreign language required by the degree regulations
Requirements of the language course are
participating to the meetings marked in the detailed schedule
Grading of the English course is pass/fail.
Pre-course essay: Monday, 17 January 2011, 18.00 - 19.00. Room T2
The pre-course essay is a 'diagnostic' task to show your strengths and weaknesses when writing in English. It is NOT a test: no marks will be given nor taken away, but you will get feedback. You'll have about 60 minutes to write the essay on paper. NO computer needed, but please bring a pen / pencil!
More details on Monday, 17th January.
First meeting: Friday, 28 January 2011, 10.00 - 12.00. Room T5
** Please note that we start at 10.00am!
A copy of a published paper -
All students should bring a copy of a typical published paper from the field of their study. Preferably, this paper should have been written by a NATIVE SPEAKER/s ( e.g. from USA, UK, Australia, Canada... ). If two or more of you are working in the same or a similar field of study, then you may bring the same paper.
Second meeting: Friday, 25th February 2011, 10.00 - 12.00. Room T5
** Please note that we start at 10.00am!
Bring your laptop computer, if you have one. Bring an electronic copy of your draft paper or a paper copy. During the meeting, you will receive feedback on your paper, and then have the opportunity to revise it.
Third meeting Friday, 1st April 2011, 10.00 - 12.00. Room T5
** Please note that we start at 10.00am!
This lecture gives you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned during the preceding courses and from the feedback on your paper. You'll be asked to do some exercises and to write a short report. No need for laptops.
Extra Support, Friday 8th April 2011 10.00 -12.00. Room T5
** Please note that we start at 10.00am!
This lecture is for those who need extra language support. Please bring a copy of your draft paper with you. You will be given further help and practice in writing in English.
Presentations practice: lecture, 15th April 2011, 10.00 - 12.00. Room T5. Optional but recommended
** Please note that we start at 10.00am!
Aims/Objectives: to give all of you an opportunity to practise talking about your paper.
1. Before the lecture, please prepare a 5-7 minute summary of your paper.
2. During that lecture, I'm going to ask every one of you to give that short spoken summary of your paper to a fellow student, i.e. pair-work.
3. Thus, you may need to make some notes, and you may want to bring slides with you, either on paper, or in your laptop.
** These summaries will NOT be given to the whole group!
4. We might have time for 1 or 2 short presentations to the whole group if any of you would like to do that. The presentation should be about 8 minutes in length, and you may present your paper or part of of your paper.
Alternatively, you may choose a different topic altogether.
But please let me know BEFORE the lecture. I'll give you some tips in advance if you wish.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you on 18th January.
