- 14.8.2006 Sign up for students will be opened on 12th of September
- 14.8.2006 If you want to be a tutor of this course, read the tutor page and send email to the professor immediately :)
Follow the opinnot.tik.netsec newsgroup during the whole course. It is our main announcement media.
Students sign up by sending an application to "course code as written in the beginning of this page"@tml.hut.fi as plain text in message body (and transcript of completed courses as an attached PDF) after the first meeting
but before the deadline given in the schedule.
Details of this application email are given below.
Before signing up, the student should choose one of the listed topics,
and two additional topics in case too many students choose the same
primary topic. The student should also find and read a few articles on
the chosen topic. The topics are presented in the first meeting, and
after it on the topic list. If you want to
suggest an own topic, you need to agree on it together with the
professor (because you need a tutor).
Note, that due to the limited amount of tutors on this seminar, we can
only accept a maximum of 35 students to the course. It is therefore
in your own interest to justify why you should be taken, since only
partially filled or poorly justified applications will be among the
first ones to be rejected.
You apply for the course by sending an e-mail with the subject
Registration - your student number
to "course code as written in the beginning of this page"@tml.hut.fi.
In the e-mail should be mentioned:
- Name
- Student number
- Contact information (e-mail address)
- Your cc.hut.fi account username (for the Optima account)
- Your major and minor (or the name of your master programme)
- Your transcript of completed courses (OODI-ote) as attached file. The one that you get from web order form is enough.
- That in writing your paper you agree to follow the guidelines for research and scientific writing ethics presented in Good scientific practise and procedures for handling misconduct and fraud in science by National Advisory Board on Research Ethics
- Your primary topic area and a preliminary title.
Include:
- The topic title (as given on the Introduction to topics page)
- The preliminary title of you paper and a short (1/2 page)
description of the problem setting that you will research.
- A couple of references, where you would start looking for
information if you are lucky enough to get this topic.
Since the specific topic you will write about still is
open, these references can be general, althoug
e.g. "www.ietf.org" will not do as a good reference.
- One or two additional topics that you are interested in, in case
too many students choose your primary topic area, in which case you
necessarily will not be able to write about that subject. You do not
need to describe these topics as thoroughly as your primary
topic. Naming the topic title and a tentative focus is enough.
- Your previous knowledge in this area (prerequisite courses or
other knowledge)
- A justification:
-
The justification explains for the course personnel, why you should be
able to take the course this term. How far are you in your studies
(how many credits do you have) and why do you need to take this course.
You could mention when you plan to start writing your thesis.
If you are graduating soon and really need to take this course now, state so
in your application.
If you don't write any justification for taking this course,
your application will be along the first to be rejected.
Unfortunately, there won't be enough tutors for everyone.
The accepted students among with the topics they get to
research and their personal tutors will be announced
in the newsgroup
opinnot.tik.netsec according to the course schedule.
The application e-mails will be acknowledged as the course
personnel receive them. (The applications will be acknowledged manually - don't expect real-time answers.)
